It’s all in the genes

Without a shadow of doubt, it is India’s number one family

There is something magical, mystical and tragic about the halo that envelops the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. In the 60 years that India has been an independent Republic, one of the family members has served either as the de jure or the de facto Prime Minister for a little more than 41 years. In any other country, that kind of domination would have been the kiss of death for democracy. Indeed, when Indira Gandhi imposed an Emergency on the nation in 1975, it did appear as if democracy was dying. But of late, the magic and the aura is fading a bit.

Jawahar Lal Nehru did not owe his place in history to his father, Moti Lal Nehru, whose house, Anand Bhawan in Allahabad, was the de facto office of the Congress party before Independence. Jawahar Lal never selected his daughter Indira, to succeed him. While suffering from terminal illness, he rather anointed Lal Bahadur Shastri as his successor. Indira got her chance only after Shastri’s untimely and unexpected death. But, in a bid to continue the hold of her family on the party, she chose her younger son Sanjay, as her political heir.
